In the safety industry, you’ll often hear about the term “Personal Protective Equipment”, or PPE. While PPE is not the first line of defense against safety hazards (for example, it’s often better to remove the hazard altogether or engineer some way to avoid the hazard completely) it is a very important one. To be sure, depending on the situation, PPE can save your life.
However, many homeowners don’t consider the work they do around their home to be the type of thing that requires PPE. That unfortunate assumption has led to many injuries and even deaths. We’d like to encourage you to consider the use of PPE before you handle projects or even routine maintenance of your property. Giving just a few minutes to stop and think about the activity you’re about to perform can save your life. As you do so, think about the potential for injury, and then put on the appropriate PPE that can help protect you from that hazard.
