Fires can be extremely dangerous and can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. For that reason, and many others, smart homeowners install smoke detectors, which help to alert the occupants to potential fires before they consume the entire house. However, there is a danger that can come from even controlled fires that can be just as deadly as an all-consuming house fire – carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon monoxide, in large amounts, can kill a person in as little as five minutes. Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels. Because this is such a serious danger, smart homeowners also install carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of their home, perhaps near fuel-burning appliances. Just as important as these detectors is the need to have heating systems like furnaces and chimneys or other fuel-burning appliances inspected regularly to make sure they’re working properly and are not discharging dangerous amounts of gas.
