In our second post in a series about powering your electronic devices, we thought we’d discuss the importance of surge protection. Surge protectors keep your appliances from suffering damage due to a power surge or spike. Surges and spikes are very similar, the difference mainly being the length of time that they happen, so we’ll just talk about surges. Surge protectors detect increases in voltage flowing to the electrical outlet that exceeds a designated level, and then they divert the excess voltage into ground.
Power surges can happen for a variety of reasons, including blackouts, brownouts, lightning strikes, faulty wiring, or even just the typical operation of high-voltage appliances. You can protect your entire home using whole-home surge protection. You’ll need to consult a licensed electrician for that. Additionally, you can use standalone surge protector units. As these units absorb and divert power surges, they lose a measure of effectiveness, even though they still pass electricity to your devices. Be sure to replace them over time to ensure that your devices are protected.
