As springtime starts to wind up, and summer is just around the corner, people are spending more time outdoors. For parents and grandparents, this means keeping the little ones in their family occupied in a safe and worthwhile way. To do this, many homeowners have decided to install playground equipment on their property. While this can be a very good thing, there are also some inherent dangers to look out for.
Starting from the ground up – what is the ground underneath and around the playground like? Are all rocks and other hard objects removed from the soil? Is there an appropriate (read: soft) ground cover to cushion trips and falls? Is there enough space between the moving parts? For example, most swing sets have a requirement to be at least 24 inches apart. If you’ve owned the equipment for a while, is it free of rust or sharp edges? Why not take a close look at the playground on your property to make sure there are no potential dangers?
