Inspect Your Sewer Lines. It’s likely that you already know what maintenance issues need to be dealt with regarding your sewer system if you’ve lived in your home for a long time. New homeowners purchasing a home may not have any understanding of potential problems with their sewer lines.

Be Mindful Of What Goes Down the Drain. Only water, toilet paper, and human waste should be flushed down the sewer or drain, otherwise, you run the risk of causing a blockage. Do not send feminine hygiene products, food scraps, or cooking grease down the drain. Even if wipes are labeled flushable, they can cause blockages. Hair is the leading cause of blockages in showers, sinks, and shower tubs. A drain screen is an easy solution to this problem.

Flush the Drains With High Pressure. If buildup or blockages occur regularly in your pipes, you should run water through them regularly. At least once a month, we recommend flushing each sink with high pressure. This can dislodge any obstructions in your pipes and sends them on their way before they start forming a clog.

Sewer Problems Must Be Addressed Quickly. When you identify a blockage or other problem with your sewer line, the best thing to do is to deal with the issue as quickly as possible. This can be done by having a professional de-clog your line with hydro jetting or snaking the main line. Backed-up sewage can make your life miserable for a long time after the incident.

Clean the Sewer Lines Often. Inside older cast-iron pipes, the surface usually becomes jagged, which in turn causes debris to collect and build up. These clogs will continue growing until they start blocking the flow in the pipe. Your plumber has professional tools for removing buildup of any sort inside the pipes. This is typically paired with regular hydro jetting to ensure that sewer lines stay functioning and helps you avoid any unwelcome surprises.
